The Greatest Short Stories of Leo Tolstoy Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3,378 ratings

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), a Russian author and moral philosopher, is considered one of the world's finest writers, and his masterpiece "War and Peace" has been dubbed "the greatest novel ever written." He thought that the objective of great creative art is to educate. However, the message in all of his stories is delivered with such wit that the reader is unaware that it is very didactic. Tolstoy had an uncanny ability to notice even the tiniest shifts in consciousness and to record the tiniest movements of the body, which he conveyed in his works. Those who visited Tolstoy as an elderly man said he made them feel very uncomfortable since he seemed to comprehend their unspoken sentiments. Some saw him as the embodiment of nature and pure energy, while others saw him as the world's conscience, but for practically everyone who knew him or read his works, he was not only one of the finest writers who ever lived, but also a living symbol of the search for life's purpose. This collection contains some of his beast works including Two Old Men, Ilyas, Evil Allures, but Good Endures and many more.

About the Author

Born in Russia in 1828, Leo Tolstoy grew up to become a novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and philosopher. A master of realistic fiction he had little interest in academics when he was young. In 1851 he enlisted himself in the Russian army and served in the Crimean War (1854-1856). He records his experience in Sevastopol Stories (1855). Tolstoy produced an autobiographical novel, Childhood (1852), followed by Boyhood (1854) and Youth (1857) which earned him literary acclaim. War and Peace (1865-1869) and Anna Karenina (1875-1877) remain two of his greatest novels. In his short autobiographical story, A Confession (1882), Tolstoy reflects on his mid-life existential crisis. The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) and What Is It To Be Done led to his excommunication from the Russian Orthodox Church in 1901 for a radical anarcho-pacifist Christian philosophy. The Kingdom of God Is Within You expresses his ideas on non-violent resistance. In the last few days of his life, while his health was deteriorating, he separated from his wife and left home. He died of pneumonia at a train station in 1910, at the age of 82.

Great For Reading Aloud during Covid~
My husband ordered this book and he reads aloud to us several evenings a week during our Happy Hour during Covid 19. We are enjoying all the stories. Each one is rich and has great values and deep meanings. I think this is a ritual we will keep long after. Tolstoy's short stories are so well written and most take only 10-30 minutes to read aloud.

these stories can sometimes seem. redundant but are important lessons that are worth repeating and learning. Love will always be the answer. The last story is especially worth reading

Some stories are excellent, some are good, and some of them fall flat. Leo Tolstoy might have been the world's greatest novelist, but his short stories are not quite up to par with other short story writers, such as Anton Chekhov. Still, this book is worth reading

A greatest master of story telling of millennia. Stories teach love and compassion. But why tolstoy chose only poor and humble to follow words of god and he showed any good men in rich???
